Why are more and more buttons chipping?

1 October 2001

Problem:A suit jacket with standard buttons was drycleaned normally on a standard two bath process in accordance with the care label. Afterwards several buttons showed extensive chipping.

Cause:The plastic used for these buttons has not been designed to withstand the repeated impact against the cage in a normal cleaning cycle.

Responsibility:There was no implied warning on the care label in the garment so the blame here lies with the garment maker. If the care symbol had carried the warning bar beneath, then the cleaner would have been expected to accept responsibility.
