Acland offers streamlined ops

7 April 1998

Acland Hospital, Oxford, part of the Nuffield Group has opened a laundry which has been designed for its user-friendliness. The hospital, which has 37 private beds, two large operating theatres and one smaller theatre for minor operations is also equipped with a physiotherapy unit, X-ray department, laser unit, pathology laboratory and health screening service.

Its laundry is fitted with Electrolux washer-extractors—one W75, two W230 MP and one FLE 220 MP units—three TT500 gas tumble dryers, one IM3316 and one IM2310 flatwork ironers.

The laundry processes polyester-cotton sheets, theatre greens, duvets, pillows, blankets, staff uniforms and patients' clothing.

Some 2000 pieces are processed each week, according to head of housekeeping Bernard O’ Leary.

The system “lets us be in control of of our work,” said Mr O’Leary, adding that around 90% of the work goes through on special hospital programs.

There are three laundry staff, all part of the housekeeping team working in the laundry between 8am and 4pm.
