Linen Connect, the supplier of bed, bath, kitchen and table linens, has donated several sets of high quality bedding, duvets, pillows and other linens for the crew bunks at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Tower Lifeboat station, the busiest in the country, as well as making a donation to the crew fund at Tower RNLI.

The donations were in response to an appeal by Stuart Boyd, the Master of the Worshipful Company of Launderers, who has chosen the RNLI Tower Lifeboat station as the charity the Company will support during his year as Master.

Tower Lifeboat in central London is the RNLI’s busiest station and is manned 24/7 all year round with a crew and boat ready to launch in 90 seconds, according to Kevin Maynard, the manager of Tower RNLI lifeboat station. Since 2002, the team has responded to over 6,000 call outs and saved more than 275 lives.

Based next to Waterloo Bridge, the lifeboat station covers nearly 14 miles of River Thames between Woolwich Ferry and Battersea Bridge. It uses a 10.5m E-class Mk 2 in-shore lifeboat with 850HP of twin-jet drive and a speed of 45 knots, the fastest craft plying the river. The station operates with two full-time and two volunteer crew on every 12-hour shift.

Maynard said: “Because the majority of our volunteers also have day jobs, families and other responsibilities, they usually sleep in the bunks when doing night shifts. Obviously with a revolving cast of so many people, the sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases are washed and dried a phenomenal amount, so it’s imperative they are of good quality to withstand such constant use. As a charity, that is obviously a cost to us, so Linen Connect ‘s donation is a huge contribution to our aim of saving lives and keeping the river safe.”

Richard Yates, sales director, Linen Connect said: “We were humbled by the work being done at Tower RNLI.  People take a great deal of comfort knowing the RNLI are there, and in our own way we are keen to support them. Our group managing director is providing the RNLI with financial support, and we are also going to be providing Tower RNLI with linen, duvets and other textiles to make sure their accommodation is as comfortable as possible.”
