Launderers and drycleaners in the UK who would like to get together to share knowledge and experiences and to socialise with like-minded professionals are invited to sign up to the long established Whitsters Club.

The Whitsters Club reaches its 95th anniversary next year and continues to hold interesting lunch events in London to which it hopes to attract the next generation of textile care professionals.

Hon Secretary, David M Hart, said: “All who are, or have been, involved in the laundry and drycleaning industry are very welcome to become members. The committee is at present preparing next year’s meetings and events.

”For example, our luncheon meeting at The Cavendish in London’s West End last month heard Jo Emmerson from Girbau talking about the Travelling Scholarship tour 2018, sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Launderers, which she had organised to a number of Girbau and other associated premises in Spain.”

John Shonfeld, committee member and chair of last month’s event, added: “We meet four times a year, latterly at the Cavendish Hotel in Mayfair, for a lunch, including wine, and an entertaining speaker. It’s a great opportunity for launderers to get together, to network and chat, and where friendships are made. The cost is just £25 per annum, which then entitles a discount on all lunches.”

“We would be delighted to hear from any LCN readers, all you have to do is contact David Hart, at sec@whitsters.co.uk and you would be made very welcome.”

Whitster is a 15th century term and according to the Oxford English dictionary was a person employed in bleaching cloth or yarn. The Whitsters of Datchet Mead, near Windsor, are mentioned in a humorous episode in the Shakespeare’s comedy ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’. The club was founded in 1924.
