Bleach fades wool blanket

27 February 1998

What to do when disaster strikes? Richard Neale of the Drycleaning Technology Centre opens his problem files and offers some solutions.

Problem: White staining was noted on a wool blanket following washing in warm water at 40°C.

Cause: The removal of colour, accompanied by some fibre degradation, is typical of that caused by accidental pick-up of bleach. If this was not noted when the item was handed in then it is more likely to have occurred while in the possession of the cleaner—with whom the responsibility lies.

Rectification: This is a good candidate for airbrush re-colouring. This technique can be sufficiently permanent to allow drycleaning and laundering in the future.
