New workwear show launched

n This month sees the launch of a new UK exhibition aimed at the corporate workwear market — a rapidly growing sector of the textile care industry and projected to be worth £428 in 1998.


The “Wear to Work Show” is being organised by Company Clothing Magazine and will be held at the Royal Horticultural Halls and Conference Centre in Westminster, London on 21-22 October. At this new event, visitors will be able to talk to around 50 exhibitors in an 800m2 exhibition display area—including many of the foremost names in the industry—and be able to attend four important Company Clothing seminars being held over the two days.

The event’s organiser, Malcolm Gill said that the exhibition has arisen out of the one day roadshows that Company Clothing have been organising biennially at hotel venues in London and Manchester for a number of years. These have taken place in the interim years when there has not been a “Career and Workwear” exhibition.

Mr Gill said that the impetus for moving to a more traditional exhibition was a general view amongst exhibitors that the corporatewear market was moving very quickly, and is getting too big to be served by one-day road shows.

There has been much support for a two day event in London, exemplified by the show being almost fully booked. Many major names have taken stand space—eg, Simon Jersey, Dimensions, Jermyn Street Design, Hobbs—including some who have never attended a Company Clothing roadshow—such as Alexandra.

The exhibition is acceptedly much smaller than “Career and Workwear”, which occupies around 2000m2 of stand space. The intention is to make it a regular and complementary event, to be held on alternate years to the established show.

Turning to the seminars, topics to be covered are: “Protective Clothing and PPE”, “A-Z of Purchasing a Company Uniform”, “Choosing a Fabric” and “Corporate Style”. They are sponsored by 3M Scotchlite, De Baer, Klopman and Jerzees respectively, and entry is by ticket (each £60 + VAT).

“Protective Clothing and PPE” is aimed at executives with responsibility for providing protective clothing for their workforces. It will cover an introduction to PPE and CE marking, and then go on to talk about the legal obligations and risk assessment by the employer and the role of the manufacturer in meeting the standard.

“A-Z of Purchasing a Company Uniform” is a seminar for executives responsible for the specification and purchase of clothing for their employees, and is expected to be of equal value to first time buyers and experienced buyers alike.

Speakers will take delegates through the key stages of developing, producing and issuing corporate clothing—from planning and budgeting, through assessing purchasing options and selecting a supplier, to considering the logistics of implementing a new corporate uniform.

As fabric has a crucial bearing on appearance, comfort, function, price and protection, the “Choosing a Fabric” seminar should aid purchasers and suppliers to make the correct choice. Speakers will look at corporatewear fabrics, offer advice for selecting the right fabric for the job and end with a leading supplier sharing their many years of experience in selecting fabrics from an extensive range.

In the final seminar, “Corporate Style”, a top corporatewear consultant explains why corporate style is important and discusses the style options available.
