LCNi brings to the stage the latest developments in textile care solutions across all disciplines

Welcome to International Showcase, LCNi’s response to the sad, albeit temprary, demise of international shows over the past two years. Texcare International 2021, planned to be held in Frankfurt, Germany at the end of November, was cancelled in September because the prospect of travelling internationally was proving a turn-off for so many in these uncertain times. Messe Frankfurt sadly and reluctantly pulled the plug on the ‘big’ show.

At LCNi, we felt it was only fair that manufacturers, suppliers and service providers should get a chance to present their innovations to a market that is keen to see what is available to boost their businesses into a post-Covid-19 worlds0... roll up, roll up to see what is appearing on the global stage for the delectation and delight of textile care professionals everywhere, in all sectors and disciplines.

Total laundry systems were very much a promised part of Texcare Internatonal and in an interview published in LCNi in August, when Texcare was still on the cards, Elena Lai, secretary general, European Textile Services Association (ETSA), talked about how major sustainability challenges in the textile industry can best be met, adding that the textile care industry’s business model has always been based on durability and re-use, so it has an important role to play. “Our industry is the key to providing sustainable solutions and eco-friendly best practice,” she said.

Now, as LCNi goes to press, much focus is on the COP meeting in Glasgow, her words on sustainability resonate. “We are in a truly historic and exciting time for the textile services industry. We are all well aware that our industry is the key to providing sustainable solutions and ecofriendly best practice. We had a series of webinars at ETSA dedicated to sustainability and circular economy being key elements of the Green Deal and our larger companies such as industrial laundries, key textile manufacturers and innovative machinery companies, are all up to the task and providing effective solutions.,” she said.

“Our national associations, too, members of ETSA, are all working synergistically to exchange their best ways forward, in Europe and beyond – we also have partners from the US. These efforts within ETSA’s value chain make us really proud and eager to go the extra mile, guiding our members towards those areas which seem to be the most challenging. For instance, the new EU Climate Law, which calls for 55% CO2 reductions by 2030: this means that European industries will all have to do better to make us reach these targets in less than nine years.

“We know ETSA could represent the right network to identify the best way forward on this issue and truly perform and deliver what the EU is advocating for.”

Read on to see how the manufacturers and suppliers can help us achieve this.

Fintec

New compact garment folding machine from Fintec, Germany

The challenges of the last few months have led many laundries to tackle new business areas. The key question Fintec's product development was asking: which machines do laundries need in order to react flexibly to new conditions?

To support these customers, Fintec developed a compact folding machine with a very simple operating concept. The folding robot is highly digitized and runs fully automatically. Its focus is on solid and practical folding, while it also provides detailed diagnostics including preventive maintenance.

Further advantages are its minimal footprint of 2.00 m x 1.20 m and its flexibility in positioning. It can be integrated into existing systems (Fintec and others) but also works as a self-sufficient installation including automatic feeding. The low investment with minimal energy consumption and wear and tear is also extremely attractive for companies.

Girbau

Girbau recently presented its new feeders for high speed flatwork ironing systems, the latest generation DRE and DRC systems, which deliver precision and control to ensure a perfect, high quality finish. The company has also launched its new Compact Pro flatwork ironer, another latest generation machine that makes it possible to feed, dry, iron, fold and stack in a single unit. The new DRE Feeder is a versatile machine offering precision, speed and quality through a variable setup with 2, 3 or 4 loading stations which, thanks to their new clamps, assure a smooth, trouble free transfer from the loading stations to the servers, so boosting the quality of the transfer to the ironing area. Also, the loading stations have been designed to boost ergonomics, safety and comfort while working as they can be adjusted individually to suit the operator's height and automatically detect the presence of linen to start loading with no need for a scan button. The PLC control system of the DRE feeder, pictured, features the Human Machine Interface (HMI) with the latest, most advanced 10" touchscreen to ensure optimum control of the feeding parameters.

The Girbau DRC Cornerless feeder meets the different productivity and quality requirements of each laundry, at the same time as providing the highest safety level for operators. This machine was developed for fast feeding of individual sheets with special attention to efficiency, boosting the operator's throughput per hour. This high throughput speed was achieved by using Girbau patented Cornerless feeding technology, so the operator does not need to find the corners to feed in the item. This makes this machine unique in its ability to work in 2 lanes.

Likewise, the new Compact PRO flatwork ironer from Girbau is a latest generation device that allows five functions to be performed in one, in the minimum space. This machine makes it possible to feed, dry, iron, fold and stack in a single unit, as synchronisation and ease of use are in the DNA of the Compact PRO ironing system. The heating power of the Compact PRO allows linen to be ironed directly with no need to go through the dryer first, saving time and energy and at the same time guaranteeing an outstanding quality finish thanks to surface finishing by the roller and the alternating straps. This new system also has what is known as adaptable folding, allowing it to make up to 2 primary folds, up to 3 cross folds on i lane or the option of making 2 cross folds on 2 lanes. Finally, compact PRO is equipped with guards and security features for the user's peace of mind and is available in the CompactPro600 model, allowing throughputs of up to 175 kg/h of linen; or the CompactPro800 model, allowing throughputs of up to 220 kg/h of linen, with the possibility of increasing this thanks to the high speed option (25 m/min) for working with pre dried linen or that with a high polyester content.

GMP

GMP reconfirms its position as a leading ironer manufacturer, presenting E2: E line second generation, radically changing the approach to professional _ equipment. GMP is a team with a lifetime experience in the ironing industry: a massive know how that has represented a strong base for this significant evolution project.

We know that one of the main critical points of an industrial product is the interaction between human being and machine and this has been the core of the development.

E2 has been designed around the person because, at GMP, we wanted the individual to become the centre of this evolution project. "Contrary to washers and dryers an ironer is an open system, where the individual experience in operating makes a big difference in whether you obtain great results or great issues" says Rudi Giaon, GMP CEO. "If you add difficulties in finding experienced labour, or frequent turnover very typical of seasonal hospitality activities, you can obtain a problematic mix. In designing E2, GMP challenge has been able to offer an effective solution to a deep necessity and I believe we have fully reached our goal."

Offering operator training, E2 delivers a smooth user experience and generates fewer service calls for the distributor."

Jensen

The new patented UVClean system in Jensen tunnel washers prevents bacterial growth in double drum sections automatically and without any chemical supply it is the mast natural, most ecological and mast efficient way of eliminating germs and bacteria. And what' more: contrary to chemical methods, bacteria cannot become resistant to UV radiation.

The disinfection of internal surfaces in a tunnel washer is key to avoid germ growth and biofilms, and it’s a topic that many laundries are very well aware of. The cleaning of these surfaces on the inside of the machine is difficult and costly. Ultraviolet C radiation is a natural approach to current methods to treat localized biofilms, and it's used for an ever increasing bandwidth of applications in many industries.

In the tunnel washer, two UV C lamps mounted hi a housing on the outer drum irradiate the inner surfaces between the inner and outer drums. The reflection effect reaches the inner surfaces and kills microorganisms. The two 10W bulbs need to be replaced approximately after one year. After i6 months of round the clock operation, the UV lamps still provide 75% of the radiation emission. Both the cleaning and the exchange of the lamps is quite easy. Contact samples from the surfaces can easily be taken through two control flanges, meaning that the efficiency of the UVClean system can be measured at any given time. Also, the radiation performance of the lamps can be checked through inspection windows.

This simple, almost maintenance-free system with low operating costs is also available as a retrofit for existing JENSEN tunnel washers known for their high wash quality and ultra-fast transfer time of just four seconds: Thanks to the at least 50% shorter transfer time compared to conventional tunell washers and the adjustable swivel angle of up to 285% degrees, laundries can increase their production by several hundred tons of linen per year - in perfect hygienic conditions.

Kannegiesser

if you need to know where laundry from customer 1112 has got to, you need to consult Kannegiesser’s eVue which can tell you exactly where a piece of laundry is anywhere in the process. eVue, says Kannegiesser, is the most advanced web-based process control software for modern laundry operations. The reliable and intuitive system offers operators and management in laundries full transparency and control over their production process. It ensures that the laundry can work at maximum capacity. This is ensured, among other things, by highly developed system diagnostic functions, outstanding production routing and tracking, as well as clear and real-time reports on production and operating performance.

What are the advantages of eVue?

1) Full transparency: the basis for process optimisation and productivity: eVue offers quick orientation about die processes in die laundry. At any point in time, it can be seen which batch (customer and/or category; is at which position in die process. The display is shown on a modern touch monitor with zoom function, as we know it today from smartphones and tablets. Messages and information can be sent automatically by email and optionally even as push messages directly to mobile devices. Full transparency not only relates to die current laundry batches, but also to possible malfunctions and interruptions: for example, you can see at a glance at which point a belt conveyor is out of service or an emergency stop button has been pressed. This enables quick and targeted intervention so that operations can continue quickly.

2) Reports: Accurate, clear and real time reports are essential for full transparency of the laundry processes. The recording of current and historical data, batch and load tracking from sorting to the finishing area, immediate notification of interruptions and malfunctions, clear and easy-to-read dashboard displays and reporting functions ensure transparency and provide the basis for optimizing die logistical processes in the die laundry.

3) Control of the logistic processes in the laundry: eVue controls die logistical processes in the laundry and thus does more than just visualize and generate reports. After defining the basic data such as customer, category and production lists, eVue is used, for example, to allocate the sorting compartments, allocate the storage lanes and define the drop points.

4) Diagnostic tools for technicians: Convenient diagnostic tools ensure that interruptions can be eliminated quickly. By clicking on the fault message, the technician is guided step-by-step through a menu with information on troubleshooting. The elimination of the malfunction is documented in the database so that malfunctions can also be evaluated using extensive reporting. In addition, the system provides alarms and reminders for preventive maintenance.

The goal: to increase productivity

The extensive functions of eVue always have one goal in mind: increasing the productivity of the entire laundry. Full transparency of the processes enables a continuous optimization of the laundry, avoids lengthy “searches” for certain batches of laundry and enables rapid intervention in the event of malfunctions. Unnecessary idling at individual work steps is avoided, non-productive times are reduced and every batch of laundry is in the right place at the right time. www.kannegiesser.com
