The future is white – and green

For those establishments that are bucking the casual dining trend for ‘nude’ tables to opt for ones clothed in quality linen, ethical sourcing, durability and the ability to fight off bugs are all part of the sell for textile rental operations

Minimalistic table settings have been steadily on the rise so are the days of pristine, pressed table linen really gone? That is a question that is exercising Victoria Oracz, sales director for Vision’s laundry division. She points at recent research conducted by P&G Professional which found when consumers were asked about the importance of linen, and the example that it sets; a clean, dazzling tablecloth could improve the rating of the establishment by as much as one point, ‘making or breaking’ a guest experience.

“For those that still use restaurant table linen, it’s hugely important to consider the quality and performance to ensure it sets the right impression. Professional linen rental services are an easy and efficient way to ensure linen is maintained,” she says.

Oracz explains: “Customers now come to us with queries regarding our ethical sourcing commitments. This growth has been unprecedented; customers are choosing companies who engage in responsible business practices as opposed to merely sticking with a supplier for the sake of tradition.”

Cotton v polyester

“Although cotton still seems to be extremely popular, we are seeing a continual increase in demand for polyester in the linen rental market.”

One of the main reasons for this is is due to its durability she says. “Also, polyester is far more cost-effective to process with lower temperature washing and faster drying time. Through our partnership with Riegel, one of America’s oldest textile manufacturers, we produced the Riegel Premier table linen collection, already a firm favourite with laundries and hotels across the US. This spun polyester offers a more natural feel with added intuitive properties to ensure durability wash after wash,” says Oracz.

Vision has also been working alongside Microfresh which has  have developed an innovative technology designed to rid fabrics of unpleasant odours and prevents the spread of harmful bacteria – key in a dining setting. “We will be selecting other products in our range to add Microfresh to in order to prolong the life of any bed, bath or table linen,” says Oracz. “It’s effective even at low wash temperatures.”

Over at D G Textiles, the company has traditionally focused on 100% cotton for the table linen market and Andy Jamshidzadeh, director of D G Textiles, says this is still the prime requirement for five-star hotels with restaurants but the choice of supplier is always governed by price and that customers will shop around to get the right level.
