Born Bertie Edmond Harper in Bermondsey, Ted (or Lad to his closest) joined the Penguin Laundry in 1937. When the laundry closed, the late D R Werner was instructed to sell the process plant and Ted was invited to become his auctioneer’s clerk.

He remained with the Werner Organisation in the Strand, rising to manage Machinery Auctions until 1970 when he assumed financial control and moved the practise to Esher, where he was later joined by his son Nicholas.

He is survived by his second wife Gladys Adelaide and his children Jane and Nicholas.
