Procter & Gamble has become a partner in a Human Needs project to launch a sustainable clean-tech community centre in one of the largest slums in Africa, housing approximately between 300,000-800,000 people.

The Kibera Town Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, is fuelled by solar energy, takes its water supply from a borehole, and includes an innovative wastewater management system.

P&G has established the Ariel Laundry Room within the centre and it says this will offer a hygienic washing space with access to clean water. It is equipped with two washing machines, two tumble dryers and scrubbing boards.

The company said the availability of this equipment would dramatically reduce both physical strain and wash time for local women, with significant benefits for their health.
