Arson is suspected

30 September 1998

Fire investigators believe that a fire which badly damaged a Birmingham drycleaners could have been started by arsonists, reports Andrew Smith.

The blaze at Warwickshire Drycleaners of Ladypool Road, Sparkbrook, occurred on 25 September, causing extensive smoke and fire damage.

A senior fire officer told reporters: “We are treating the cause of the fire as being of doubtful origin. It was a severe fire.” When the firefighters made their way into the building wearing breathing apparatus they found that 20 bags containing garments were alight.

No one was on the premises at the time. The last member of staff had left an hour before.
