Bay Area may let cleaners buy more time to comply

10 June 2010

Cleaners who are eligible will have to contact the district's legal division and enter into a legally-binding Compliance and Settlement Agreement (Compliance Schedule).

This will oblige the business to pay cumulative penalties for each quarter of non-compliance in exchange for the deadline being extended up to 1 July 2011. Penalties will start at $250 increasing each quarter up to a maximum of $2,500 if the non-compliance extends for the full year.

The BAAQMD has warned that failure to meet the extended deadlines or to fulfil the terms of the compliance schedule might result in higher penalties.

California's state regulations require that all perc machines must be shut down when they reach 15 years old and this takes effect from 1 July 2010 with a final deadline of 2023.
