Berendsen is to close its laundry site in Mossley, Tameside with the loss of around 250 jobs despite workers being told they were safe after the firm had landed a lucrative contract with Manchester United, according to local press reports. The MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, Jonathan Reynolds is hoping to meet management to explore any possibility of saving it.

The firm is based in Squire Mill, in Micklehurst Road, and employs around 100 permanent staff and 150 agency workers.

According to reports in the Manchester Evening News, staff were issued with a letter provisionally confirming they will be made redundant in 30 days. The letter is reported as saying management would consult staff on possible ways of saving the factory but, if it closes, attempts will be made to redeploy workers.

The company was previously known as Initial Towels and Sunlight Service Group and became Berendsen in 2011. In September last year French laundry services group, Elis, completed a takeover.
