Border Agency officials arrest three at Surrey laundry

18 February 2009

Two of the workers are failed asylum seekers from Sri Lanka, while the other is an illegal immigrant from the Ukraine.

The maximum fine for employing illegal labour is £10,000 for each illegal employee.

UKBA area director Hugh Ind commented: “These arrests send a clear message to those working illegally. We will not tolerate this and will work hard to find those responsible and take action.

“We are happy and willing to work closely with employers so that they understand the rules. However, if they are found to be breaking the law and are employing workers illegally, we will take action and they could face a substantial fine and even a prison sentence.”
