Canadian Government publishes assessment on D5

9 February 2009

The assessment was accompanied by a report outlining a proposed approach to managing this environmental risk and this will be subject to a 60-day public comment period, which ends on 1 April 2009.

D5 is used in a range of applications including cosmetics, drycleaning and household cleaning products.

The Silicones Environmental Health and Safety Council (SEHSC) of North America has issued a statement in which it points out that if the recommendation for environmental regulatory measures goes ahead: “The Canadian Government will factor in soon to be completed scientific studies further examining how the materials actually behave in the environment.” SEHSC adds that it fully expects that these studies will continue to demonstrate that D5 is safe for the environment and that action is not needed.
