Clothescare's Anita saves a life with first aid skills

29 November 2002

On Saturday, November 23 Anita and Clothescare's owner Richard Jay were working when they heard a bang. Mr Jay looked out and saw the neighbour walking across holding his arm. He called out "Richard, get an ambulance, I think I've cut my hand off." Richard called for Anita, who is trained in first aid and while waiting for the ambulance, Anita applied a tourniquet, using a T-shirt to stop the horrific bleeding, then a leather strap to hold the hand in place.

The injured man lost consciousness several times but Anita and Richard managed to bring him round.

The ambulance men said Anita had saved the man's life reports Richard.

He says that the man had to undergo, five and a half hours of surgery, but the situation is no longer life threatening, although whether he will regain use of his hand is uncertain.
