The company is staying tight-lipped about the details but describes the product as a complete innovation.
Colin Stubbs, head of the laundry chemicals division, said it had been 10 years in development in association with Lever Bros (makers of Persil) and Unilever research.
The product, which Mr Stubbs described as "revolutionary", has been on trial at sites for the last two years.
He said it would have to be proved in each individual country.
