EPA shows confidence in voluntary NPE phase-out

2 September 2010

On 18 August, EPA announced a series of measures to improve the safe handling of several industrial chemicals but did not impose a ban on NPE. The ruling also recognised a voluntary agreement with TRSA, which would phase out NPE’s use in liquid detergents by 31 December 2013 and in all powder detergents by 2014.

Over the last five years, the industry’s NPE use has declined by approximately 75% and recent TRSA data show that this trend is accelerating. Products containing NPE account for around 34% of liquid detergents and about 41% of powder detergents.
