Branch manager Roger Jones told LCN that last year 's growth in the branch's linen business had been particularly significant, rising from 53,000 pieces/week in January 2001 to 74,000 pieces week in January 2002, a rise of 23%.
The branch sends linen to the Catford plant for washing but handles all other aspects of the business - sorting, packing, collection, delivery, administration and sales.The increase meant that extra space was needed. The acquisition of the next door property will double the branch's floor area.
After refurbishing, the extra space, will be devoted to the linen business in effect setting up a separate linen department.
Mr Jones explained that expansion of the linen operation had been going on for some time. Even before last year the plant had needed to set up a dedicated linen route for its collection and delivery vehicles.
To cope with the rise in linen work last year, he had taken on extra staff and vehicles --three drivers, two vehicles, and two dedicated linen checkers and packers ( the branch already had two).
