Hard press padding makes its mark

4 March 2008

Fault: The customer complained that the white marks on this jacket could be seen from a distance and ruined the garment.

Cause: Abrasion in wear sometimes leads to white marks around the studs or buttons. However, if the damage is uniform as it is here, then it has been caused by heat and pressure in pressing. The fault can result from poor resilience of the press padding – hard, compacted press clothing will not avoid embossing the double thicknesses at the seams onto the outer cloth.

Responsibility: The cleaner should take responsibility, unless the garment came in like this, in which case a disclaimer should have been issued at reception.

Rectification: Normally, it is not possible to correct this fault, but there might be a slight improvement if the garment is re-cleaned.
