Hospital cleared over laundry death

18 December 2008

Manager Bayunga Meya, 47, was killed in December 2005 after he became trapped under a press at King George Hospital in Ilford.

Following the death, Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust were charged with breaching health and safety regulations.

The case was heard at Southwark Crown Court on 9 December 2008. The court was told that Meya had turned the system off to correct a fault, but a colleague, who was unaware of Meya's presence, re-started the machine. Meya suffered serious chest injuries when he was hit by the press's large metal basket.

During the case, the trust argued that it had taken reasonable steps to ensure safety and was subsequently cleared of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act between 1 April 2001 and 2 December 2005.
