The report, "Mortality in Drycleaning Workers, an update" is a second update of a study of 1708 workers in the drycleaning industry and was published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine in February.
However the IFI feels that a clear link between various cancers and perchloroethylene has still not been established. It explains that the NIOSH report and its predecessors do not take additional risks such as smoking and drinking into account. It also points to the lack of a statistically significant increase in cancer deaths overall in the NIOSH sub-group of workers exposed only to perc, versus the rest of population.
IFI has also criticised media coverage of the report for making the results seem more conclusive than they are.
