Industry pays tribute to Bill Murray

29 July 1998

Bill Murray, highly respected as an engineer and ironer expert, died recently, and LCN has received two tributes to him.

John Cleaver, of BMM Weston, writes: “Bill Murray had a long established reputation for excellence within the laundry industry.

“He distinguished himself as a bomber pilot during the Second World War and during the post-war years was actively involved in the nuclear industry, working on many prestigious projects. These included reactors for nuclear submarines and the Calder Hall Atomic Power Station.

“In the early 1970s he was headhunted to become the managing director of Manlove Tullis, Clydebank. This period saw the emergence of the ‘Euracorde’ range of calenders and many technical innovations to the product. In 1980 he and his wife set up Aldercass Holdings, this having Milne Ashton and Partners, a firm of consulting engineers, and Arden Laundry Power Systems, as its two subsidiaries.

“Through these companies Bill provided technical support and a variety of products to the laundry industry – an industry which has lost a professional engineer of immense stature and knowledge. He will be sadly missed.” Luc Rouquart, of Springpress, states: “Bill was a man of duty. From his time as a bomber pilot during the Second World War to his position as managing director of a nuclear plant in the US he always completed his duties to the very best of his capabilities.

“After returning to Scotland to run a maintanance facility for nuclear submarines, he accepted the position of managing director at Manlove Tullis, before founding his own company, Aldercass Holdings, specialising in ironers.

“As a Springpress agent, he was always 100% honest with us, ensuring we had an ideal business relationship.

“Bill was a family man. As a dedicated husband Bill cared for Marjorie, his wife, for many years whilst she was ill. Bill was always at her side, never giving up and never getting discouraged.

“The industry has lost an expert and I have lost a faithful friend.”
