Industry pressure leads to fire code revision

10 June 2010

Under a revised code due to be published next year, drycleaning businesses that use Class III solvent such as GreenEarth or hydrocarbon will not have to fit sprinklers if the drycleaning machine has a built-in fire suppression system and the plant does not store more than 300gallons of solvent.

This revision brings IFC codes and those of the National Fire Protection Agency more in alignment in their guidelines on Class III solvents. Many areas of the country follow IFC codes rather than NAFPA codes.

The measure was passed at IFC committee level in October 2009 but then required a period for public comment and to go for official approval before it could be finalised.
