Keeping cool and safe

1 August 1999

For the hotter weather, several workwear specialists have been introducing high-visibility pure cotton polo shirts and T-shirts that incorporate 3M Scotchlite reflective fabrics for combined safety performance and comfort.

In the heat of the midday sun, full jackets and synthetic fabrics can become extremely uncomfortable for construction workers, surveyors and engineers—indeed anyone working outside.

Working near moving traffic demands the protection of high visibility garments which conform to EN471, the European standard for high-visibility warning clothing that specifies the optical performance of garments and accessories for use on highways.

If garments are hot and cumbersome they might not be worn—risking personal safety. Often seen are waistcoats tied round a worker’s or hanging on a shovel.

Available from PPE distributors, there are several designs of garments in brilliant orange or yellow with silver Scotchlite reflective fabric that exceeds the highest brightness levels of EN471.
