Managing moisture

Du Pont’s CoolMax moisture management fabric has now moved from sportwear and underwear into the industrial arena. German specialist manufacturers Lauffenmühle and Fuchshuber have taken out licenses to use the textile to add value to their workwear/protection ranges.

Comfort and care are essential to Lauffenmühle. “As specialists in workwear fabrics, our products are used where moisture transport is in high demand,” said Michael Walz from the company’s development department. “It was obvious to us to choose CoolMax.” CoolMax is specifically engineered to keep wearers dry and comfortable through proprietary four-channel fibres developed by Du Pont. When the body perspires, CoolMax moves moisture quickly away from the skin to the outer layer of the fabric. It then dries that moisture faster than any other fibre.

Tests show that CoolMax is nearly 100% dry within 30 minutes compared with polypropylene, the next fastest drying textile, which would be 85% dry. Cotton, which absorbs and retains fourteen time more moisture than CoolMax, would be 50% dry.

Garments made with CoolMax fabrics are washable, dryable, and stay soft and non-chafing. Wearing garments made with CoolMax reduces the energy required to cool the body core, and this increases performance and endurance during a working shift.
