No interest in research

27 January 2000

A recent meeting in Gothenberg of Textranet, the European textile technology network, expressed concern at the low level of participation in European research by the textile industries.

Indications from Framework Five, the EU research programme, are that proposals for funding from the textile industries have been few.

Whether this reflects a declining interest in research and technology or a concentration on short term objectives is not clear.

President Roger Biguet said members had already created a number of alliances and could create technical grouping at short notice.

Textranet is keen to emphasise its technical resources, 1000 scientists from 18 technology centres, and its ability to assist in formulating research project proposals.
