Partner fined £5000

7 April 1999

A partner of a Midlands equipment machine repair firm was fined £5000 by a court over the death of a worker in an industrial accident.

Appearing before Birmingham magistrates, Terence Haynes, a partner in Laundry Machine, Birmingham, admitted breaches of health and safety regulations.

The court heard that the worker, Donald Kelly, fell through a suspended plywood ceiling as he was attempting to retrieve items from a loft.

He sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to hospital where he subsequently died.

The court ruled that Haynes should have been aware of the risk of going into the fragile roof space.
