RCN backs call for hospital laundry services

29 September 2006

Nursing staff who are working long hours should be offered the facility to have their uniforms laundered at the hospital, says the RCN.

The issue was raised at the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust. RCN representative Yvonne Reeves, a night sister, was reported in the local press as saying: “With things like the spread of infection being such a big issue, the national guidelines are that nurses should not wear uniforms out of work.

“The trust should provide hospital laundries for nurses to have their uniform washed. In the good old days, we used to have our uniforms laundered.”

The RCN said: “All acute health care services must provide adequate and timely laundering arrangements for staff uniforms.”
