Research reports favourable results on ultrasonic washing

It reports that it has devised an ultrasonic cleaning method that is effective on heavily-soiling such as found on shirt collars and cuffs. It claims that it may be possible to use ultrasonics rather than scrubbing or brushing for pre-treating these areas.

Nitra says that ultrasonics act not only on the textile surface but also on the fibre structure and that ultrasonic “washing” is faster than conventional methods, saves labour and uses less energy as it works at lower temperatures. Nitra also says that ultrasonic washing uses milder detergents/reagents and requires only small volumes of rinse water.
