SATRA to drop “FCRA” name

27 January 1999

Confusion caused by two research organisations using the initials “FCRA” should end soon, when one of them—SATRA—ceases to use the letters.

SATRA, the large, multi-disciplined research body based in Kettering, and the Fabric Care Research Association Ltd, of Harrogate, had been due to bring their activities together and had entered into a working partnership. As a result of this SATRA began conducting activities under the “FCRA Technology Centre” banner.

Members of FCRA Ltd subsequently voted for their association to cease the arrangement with SATRA.

Though the original logic for SATRA to use the “FCRA” initials was clear, the organisation is now planning to phase out the use of its name “FCRA Technology Centre”.

Bernard Ingamells, who is a non-executive director of FCRA Ltd and who is acting managing director and production director of Fenland Laundries, welcomed the SATRA move. “It will save a lot of confusion,” he stated.

Confusion had led to an error occurring in a caption in the January issue of Laundry and Cleaning News. Two personnel were described as being with the “FCRA” rather than correctly as with the “FCRA Technology Centre”.

Both FCRA Ltd and SATRA remain pledged to offer comprehensive technical services to the textile care sector.

Richard Turner, deputy chief executive of SATRA, said it was regrettable that the two organisations were working in competition rather than together.

SATRA has spent £200 000 establishing a textile care centre.

Mr Turner believes SATRA’s extensive, broad-based technical expertise is an important resource for the textile care sector.
