Sierra Club retracts statements on Solvair cleaning

25 March 2010

This reverses the Sierra Club's original position on the cleaning technology. The group has retracted incorrect statements in an article on its website and removed the system from its avoid list.

“We are very pleased,” says Jamie Mayberry, vice president of marketing for Solvair LLC. “A major environmental group like Sierra Club doesn't change its position lightly.”

Solvair was disappointed by statements in an article “Green drycleaning; Clean your clothes without harmful chemicals."

Mayberry says that the article ignored Solvair's environmental benefits and concentrated only on the solvent rather than the entire system. It described the wrong solvent and the information on the solvent was inaccurate.

“We immediately contacted Sierra Club to express our concerns and backed up our point with toxicological and process information.”

The Sierra Club reviewed the information provided by Solvair and it also conducted its own research. As a result the group retracted its previous statements and removed Solvair from the “avoid” list. It also published a revised statement on its website.
