Velvet curtain looks crushed after cleaning

25 February 2008

Fault: This velvet curtain looked perfectly smooth when it was brought in but the pile appeared crushed after cleaning.

Cause: Both acrylic and modacrylic velvet (unlike cotton velvet) are thermoplastic and distort easily when heated. When cleaned in perc, acrylic types will distort over 50C and modacrylic velvet will distort over 40C. The use of steam in finishing is disastrous!

Responsibility: if this was smooth velvet when it came in, the responsibility lies with the cleaner, unless the care label features P in a circle with no line underneath and a 2-dot or 3-dot iron symbol. Even then a professional cleaner ought to be able to recognise an acrylic (e.g. Dralon) curtain fabric.

Rectification: None is possible.
