Whitsters Club boards HQS Wellington

5 February 2008

HMS Wellington was built at Devonport in 1934 and before the war served in the Pacific, mainly on station in New Zealand and China. During the war its main duties were acting as a convoy escort in the North Atlantic.

In 1947 The Honourable Company of Master Mariners bought the Wellington as a floating livery hall and it was converted to a headquarters ship. It has been at its Victoria Embankment Home since 1948. An extensive refurbishment took place in 1991. Ownership was transferred to the charitable Wellington Trust, in 2005 to preserve the ship for the nation.
