Workshop death

30 September 1998

A worker at a laundry machine repair firm was killed when he fell 15ft through a factory floor, an inquest heard.

Donald Kelly, 57, who worked for Laundry Machines of Garretts Green, Birmingham, was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, suffering from severe head injuries. He was put on a life support machine but died several weeks later.

Coroner Richard Whittington said that Mr Kelly would have had a better chance of survival if his colleagues had had a knowledge of first aid.

The inquest, which was held on the 25 September, was told that Mr Kelly was left unaided until paramedics arrived. A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
