Harry Coop has joined Christeyns, the Bradford based detergent, hygiene and construction chemical manufacturer, on a four-year chemical engineering apprenticeship, studying part time at Bradford University.

Works manager, Neville Kildunne, who runs the apprenticeship recruitment and training at Christeyns, said: “It is crucial for the progress of the company, and the industry, that we encourage and develop new talent.  We take on new apprentices each year, but this is a step up in terms of commitment to further extend the opportunities we offer.”

Twenty one year old Harry is from Bradford and decided to pursue an apprenticeship rather than a full time degree option so that he could learn in a more hands-on environment.  “I am really grateful to be starting a Chemical Engineering apprenticeship at Christeyns. I will gain a degree as well as get the opportunity to travel to different sites gaining knowledge on their chemical processes. I’m looking forward to developing my skills and hope to have a long and successful career here.”

Christeyns also works in partnership with the University of Huddersfield, to provide a year long opportunity for one undergraduate science student seeking work experience during the third year of their degree course.

Christeyns introduced the initiative in 2011 to fulfill their requirement for Quality Control Technicians and to offer someone new to the world of work a solid start and a useful training programme to provide skills for future roles.

The current incumbent is Sophie Tommis, from Huddersfield. Sophie, who is studying for a BSc Chemistry degree, is really enjoying her role at Christeyns.  “It’s a fantastic opportunity to gain hands on experience and really interesting.   As we test such a wide range of products, no two days are the same.”

Natasha Giangregorio also joined the company this summer on a one-year higher apprenticeship. Throughout the duration of her apprenticeship, she will be studying to achieve a Level 3 qualification in Business Administration.

There are also another seven apprentices currently undergoing various programmes at Christeyns.
