There is always space for a good news story in LCNi and this is a cracking one. Responding to an email from The Clerk at the Worshipful Company of Launderers (WCL) in the City of London, Liveryman Ruth Mitchell, service manager for UK Ireland and Nordic Regions at ABS, literally took the plunge from the 47th floor of the Leadenhall Building (aka the Cheese Grater) in the City of London in a bid to help people with mental health problems.

“An email arrived in May about the Lords Mayor Appeal Abseil challenge and  I took the plunge and signed up. I would definitely recommend to anyone next year to take part as it was great fun,” said Mitchell.

PHEW VIEW: The descent down the landmark Cheese Grater building was not for the faint hearted

“I don’t really know why I had a mad five minutes and pressed the apply button. I suppose it was because my health won’t allow me to do something sedate like a 10k park run that thought this would do to raise some money for charity – especially because mental health is an issue very close to my heart and I couldn’t think of a better charity to do this for,” she added.

On 4 July a team of abseiling experts were on hand to show the intrepid participants the ropes before Mitchell descended her impressive 215 metre descent accompanied by an instructor.

SOLID GROUND: A proud and justifiably ecstatic Ruth Mitchel lands back on solid ground

The aim was to raise money for The Lord Mayor’s Appeal, ‘A Better City for All’, supporting two inspiring charities, Homewards, a Royal Foundation project and MQ Mental Health Research. Both charities deliver ground-breaking programmes and find solutions to some of London’s most pressing societal issues.
