The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) proposes to introduce a compulsory duty for companies to investigate all reportable work-related accidents, ill-health or ‘near-misses’ that have resulted in serious injury.

If every single reportable incident was investigated and acted upon, the country could save £1.8 billion a year in preventing further accidents. Closing date for comment on the proposals is 3 September 2001 and copies of Proposals for a new duty to investigate accidents, dangerous occurrences and diseases are available free from: HSE Books: Tel 01787 881165 or Fax 01787 313995 or go to www.hse.gov.uk/condocs (see below)
