NORTH AMERICA

TRSA, the association representing linen and uniform rental businesses across North America, is on an awareness mission to raise concerns about the home laundering of scrubs and other healthcare attire which, it says– back up by the latest research –  puts employees, their families and communities at greater risk of infection and other hazards.

The webinar, ‘The Risks of Home Laundering Facility-Provided Scrubs’, is scheduled for 3 June, 2-3 pm ET USA.

The webinar is FREE and open to the public.

There’s history…

In the UK, back in 2018, the results of a study by a team at De Montfort University (DMU), in Leicester, England, led by Dr Katie Laird, called into question the efficacy of home laundering of nurses’ uniforms. It is a problem that is still ‘bugging’ healthcare decontamination experts.

In 2022, new research carried out by DMU, supported by the UK’s Textile Services Association (TSA), suggested this practice is hazardous, proving that some domestic machines are not up to the task of decontaminating clothes.  DMU and TSA then called on the NHS to change the guidance.

The research (‘Variable decontamination efficacy of domestic washing machines: potential risks for home laundering of healthcare uniforms’) was carried out by DMU’s Infectious Disease Research Group and presented at the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Conference in October 2022.

Now, on another continent, the results of the most recently released co-funded research on the subject by DMU funded by TRSA with TSA, means TRSA is keen to provide frontline workers, facility administrators and infection preventionists information on why professional laundry facilities are best equipped to provide hygienically clean scrubs, address common misperceptions about home laundering and share best practices to ensure patients and workers are safe.  This Zoom online event is the second instalment of a three-part Healthcare Linen & Textiles webinar series. This free webinar series is open to the public. By registering for one webinar, you will be registered for all three.
